Response to Visual Framework Examples

I was fascinated by "The Passing" by Bill Viola visual effects when it came to the movement, raw emotion and lighting effects. It reminded me of something straight out of a horror movie or something from beyond this universe, almost alien like. A ghostly woman in a human form, releasing pent up emotion whilst the unfocused lighting draws you into the mystery behind the whole visual.

What do you picture when thinking about a ghostly figure flash before your eyes? Now, think about it in slow motion. That is what this visual recreates at the beginning. The way it moves with the lighting creates a psychedelic, euphoric, and otherworldly type of effect on the mind. It may even remind you of something out of a horror or sci fi film. Yet, once you're nearing the end of this visual you're brought back to reality through the facial expression and hands rising of the woman you are now looking at.

Uncertainty crowds the mind before the figure saunters closer into focus and womanly curves become visible before what may look like her falling apart, melting or water rushing down upon her begins to happen. Through this her facial expression becomes visible and her raw emotions begin to pour out as if she's screaming or heavily crying… which immediately reminded me of a mental breakdown. The woman looks to be in control and carries herself with dignity, slowly walking forward before a rush of emotion consumes her and she is left stripped and bare at the end. The epitome of a mental health crisis.

What is this figure drifting into frame? Is it human, alien, or ghost? The unfocused lighting and slight glitch effect bring mystery to the figure in this visual. It’s intriguing because it keeps you guessing as to what it may be, what it may want or how it feels. Towards the end of the visual the figure is just close enough for there to be focus on key features and feelings. The way the lighting washes out the individual during the water pouring down creates more intensity as well as brings a clever way to cover up the woman's body.

In conclusion this visual is a very powerful piece bringing you on a journey through mystery and raw emotion. It draws you in to the wonder of what is and captivates you with the essence of mental health and how it can tear someone apart.
